“What happened to your back?” gasped Jenna.

Grace slipped on some fresh jeans and pulled a T-shirt over her head as Jenna folded laundry on her bed.

“Nothing. Just clumsy with the horses, I guess.” No need to tell her that the many purplish bruises were sex-related, courtesy of Conner a couple nights ago.

“Sure.” She continued to fold laundry, eying Grace skeptically.

“Anyway, Mr. Wagner wants me to take you out shopping today.”

“For what?”

“A nice dress. He’s taking you out to dinner. Tonight. At a fancy restaurant.” She winked.

“Why?”

“It’s Scot’s birthday. His parents take him out to dinner every year. Sort of a tradition. This is the first year his mom ain’t here, so you’ll be taking her place.”

Great. Taking his mother’s place for his birthday. Now Scot would really hate her. God, she hated herself thinking about it. She couldn’t go.

“I’m not going to ruin Scot’s birthday. I mean, his dad’s wife-swap bitch showing up instead of his mother? Bad idea.”

“Actually, it was Scot’s idea. And you know how Mr. Wagner feels.”

Wait. Scot wanted her along for his birthday? A tingly sensation warmed her heart. She felt like a twelve-year-old again being told a boy liked her.

“You’re smiling,” said Jenna.

“Am I?” Eager to give Jenna her back, she grabbed her pile of clothes from the edge of the bed and carried it to her dresser. Her smile wasn’t going anywhere soon. “So, when did you want to head out?”

“Any time. The sooner, the better, though. I agreed to help Pete clean out the kitchen.”

“Well, I’m ready whenever you are.”
